The Research and Development Manager will play a critical role in the continued growth of the organization by developing innovative, new technologies and techniques that can lead to breakthrough Intellectual Property. The primary deliverable of this function is to develop new materials and methods that can be applied to current products or support new products which will deliver a step-function improvement over current market solution. This highly technical position will manage a team of focused professionals while working closely with Sales and Marketing, Quality, Operations and Engineering teams.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Vision:
 Be the champion for technical Research & Development at the company
 Coordinate a strategic Technology Roadmap for next generation of Sensor & Harness technologies
 Serve as the Subject Matter Expert for new materials and innovations

Industry Research and Research Partnerships:
 Serve as the subject matter expert in the area of Electronics
 Act as a technical expert for the company for both internal and external customers; represent the company in technology discussions with customers
 Monitor and evaluate customer needs, industry trends, technology and innovation trends to create a Technical Roadmap
 Identify industry experts and technology to establish and build relationships
 Identify innovations in technology, materials and processes that can transform to new product concepts or improvements to existing products
 Serve as the company representative while hosting potential partners and vendors

Create and maintain IP Portfolio:
 Increase the Intellectual Property portfolio for HarcoSemco
 Review IP Mapping and Patents to understand technology shifts in the market place
 Lead Patent reviews and manage patent submissions and coordinate patent renewal decisions

TRL Process and R&D Projects Management:
 Ensure adherence and improvement of company’s TRL process for technology development projects
 Develop the digital and analog electronic subsystems for various sensors and ensure successful integration in to products from development to product certification
 Drive platform-based projects from idea through Proof-of-Concept
 Develop and test Proof-of-Concept Prototypes
 Develop test methods or techniques for prototype and benchmark evaluations
 Coordinate TRL sign-offs with cross-functional leadership as required
 Foster the transfer of breakthrough products from the advanced stage to the development process by working closely with business unit core teams

Collaborate Cross-Functionally
 Work with cross-functional teams to evaluate economic feasibility and product viability
 Ensure that the Technology Development function is closely tied to the objectives of the business units
 Work closely with Sales/Marketing, Engineering, Quality and Operations teams to ensure cross-functional engagement and understanding of new technology impacts on the business
 Support existing programs and critical customer issues upon request

Team Building:
 Manage Advanced Development staff
 Create development plans and performance management structure for direct reports
 Oversee function workload, project assignments, and deliverables
 Set the standard for the team by leading by example in the following areas: attitude, maturity, productivity, collaboration, and communication
 Create a team that rigorously searches for innovative product and technology advances that will create a clear and defendable product position in the market place
 Define goals and objectives for team members and hold team members accountable to their metrics
 Hire, develop and export talent in order to continue to strengthen the team and exceed annual expectations
 Up to 25% travel (domestic and/or international) as necessary
 Attend/Participant in training sessions as required
 Must be a “US Person” as defined by US Govt. and able to work without restriction with ITAR related data

Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

 MS degree in Engineering or physics; PhD preferred
 5+ years’ experience with product development or technology development teams
 Must have experience and knowledge of embedded systems as well as analog and digital electronics
 Ability to analyze technology, resource needs and market demand to plan and assess the feasibility of products and projects
 Ability to manage and influence a cross functional team with few direct reports and whose members have additional responsibilities outside of the team
 Superior project management and organizational skills combined with the ability to manage multi-dimensional strategic projects at one time
 Excellent analytical and organization skills
 Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with employees of all levels and from various business groups
 Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic and deadline-driven environment
 Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with both internal and external business partners
 Strong MS Office and general database skills

 Some light physical effort required
 Must be able to push, pull, and lift at least 15 lb.
 Sitting, standing, reaching, bending, and moving
 Manufacturing environment
